Reporting to the Director of Education facilitates student learning in achievement of course and program learning outcomes. Subject Matter Experts are considered Instructors first and foremost. Instructors teach, inspire, motivate, guide, support and help the students in their course. Constantly improve their instructional and professional skills. Update materials in support of SAE courses. Set high expectations for quality of work and continuously improve. Ensure that each student completes coursework that achieves the goal of the class and is done with quality and attention to detail. Complies fully with all policies, practices and procedures of SAE Institute as outlined in the faculty handbook, catalog, policy and procedures manual and the faculty assignment agreement. Additionally, Subject Matter Experts (SME) are expected to support the campus and program to help iterate curriculum and improve the overall student experience at SAE Institute.

Film - Adjunct Instructor (SME) Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach classes as assigned in accordance with all SAE policies and procedures.
  • Deliver instruction in alignment with the Student-Centered Active Education model.
  • Establish a classroom environment conducive to learning and student engagement.
  • Contribute to a learning culture by participating in academic advising, participating in curriculum development, and supporting campus events such as workshops, new student orientation, and graduation as requested.
  • Manage the learning environment by keeping accurate attendance records, submitting grades and other reports on time, and enforcing SAE policies and procedures.
  • Effectively plan and prepare for classes and student success, including developing course activities that support lesson and course learning outcomes.
  • Contact, advise, and support absent and high-risk students and document contact activities.
  • Complete faculty development activities annually to continually improve instructional delivery, professional knowledge and skills, and support for diverse learners.
  • Maintain instructor eligibility according to applicable federal, state, and accreditation regulations.
  • Abide by all SAE policies and procedures for instructors, provide tutoring and academic advising, advise student clubs, and support faculty development activities.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with the creative media industry and academic community to promote a consistent increase in student enrollment in their designated program(s).
  • Assist the Director of Education with the selection of instructors, instructor observations, and instructor assessment for designated program(s) as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Film - Adjunct Instructor (SME) Essential Skills, Knowledge and Experience

For program courses toward a Diploma or Associate’s Degree:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree; if the bachelor’s degree is not in the field that the instructor is teaching in, the instructor must also hold a credential in the field at or above the level of the program they’re teaching in.
  • A minimum of 4 years of industry experience since the completion of the qualifying degree
  • In rare cases, an adjunct faculty member who does not hold a bachelor’s degree but has extensive and significant work experience may be granted a temporary exception by the Chief Academic and Compliance Officer, with the expectation of regular demonstrated evidence of satisfactory progress toward completion of a bachelor’s degree during the approved exception period.

For program courses toward a Bachelor’s degree:

  • A minimum of a master’s degree; if the master’s degree is not in the field that the instructor is teaching in, the instructor must also hold a credential in the field at or above the level of the program they’re teaching in.
  • A minimum of 4 years of industry experience since the completion of the qualifying degree
  • In rare cases, an adjunct faculty member who does not hold a master’s degree but has extensive and significant work experience may be granted a temporary exception by the Chief Academic and Compliance Officer, with the expectation of regular demonstrated evidence of satisfactory progress toward completion of a master’s degree during the approved exception period

Desirable Skills

  • Familiarity with the Canvas learning management system
  • Familiarity with learner-centered, active learning, and problem-based and project-based learning and teaching methodologies

Sitting or Standing for long periods. Dexterity and coordination to handle files and single pieces of paper, occasional lifting of items weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds such as files, stacks of paper, reference and other materials. Moving from place to place within the organization, minimal reaching for items above and below desk level. Strength, dexterity, coordination and vision to use keyboard and video display terminal for prolonged periods.
